This stunning panoramic view of Rome shows the city from a slight elevation with fertile farmland and the Tiber River in the foreground. A numbered key at the bottom of the map identifies 82 important sites and buildings, including the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and more. The title hangs above the scene in a ribbon-style cartouche, with the coat of arms of the SPQR at right. Published by Johann Friedrich Probst. There are other editions published by Jeremias Wolff and Georg Balthasar Probst with variations in the key, coat of arms, and engraving detail. On two sheets, joined as issued.

Friedrich Bernhard Werner (1690-1776) was born in either Silesia or Richenau. He specialized in panoramic views of towns and traveled around Europe making sketches for various Augsburg publishers. He began to work for a group of publishers known as the Wolf Heirs, which included portions of a firm started by Jeremias Wolff (1663-1724) and included his son-in-law J. B. Probst and Johann Georg Hertel (1700-1775).
