This lot includes a dozen engravings of China that originally appeared in Ogilby's Atlas Chinensis; Being a Second Part of a Relation of Remarkable Passages in Two Embassies from the East-India Company of the United Provinces... It features engravings of cities such as Guangzhou, Xiamen (Amoy), Jian-ou, Hangzhou, and Nanking. There are also striking scenes, including a funeral procession, the Emperor leaving Peking, and a view of the Porcelain Tower of Nanjing.
The Atlas Chinensis is the English translation of Olfert Dapper's Gedenkwaerding Bedryf de Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Meetschappye op de Kunste en in het Keizerrijk von Taising Sina (1670), an account of the second and third Dutch diplomatic missions to China in 1662-63 and 1666-67. The engravings draw from original Chinese art, drawings by Dutch merchant Pieter van Doornik, and other European accounts of the nation, including some inspired by Johann Nieuhoff's An Embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces... (1665) (also published in English by Ogilby). There are 34 double-page engravings in the complete atlas. The title page of the work credits Arnoldus Montanus with collecting the material and Ogilby with translating and engraving.
