"[Untitled - Globe Gore of Northwestern Africa, Iberian Peninsula, France]", Coronelli, Vincenzo Maria

This large, attractive globe gore of northwestern Africa extends north to include the Iberian Peninsula, western Mediterranean, and most of France. Although a number of cities and rivers are shown in Spain, Portugal, and France, the detail is primarily focused on Africa. There are a number of animals depicted throughout northwestern Africa, including lions, camels, porcupines, and ostriches, and mountains and forests are shown pictorially. The Niger River is prominently shown flowing perpendicular to the equator, with a large lake, Lago di Guarda, o Sigisma (likely Lake Debo in present-day Mali). This gore was created for a 42" terrestrial globe.

Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti.
