This uncommon map of the British Isles depicts the Roman tribes, towns, and ancient divisions. It was engraved by Melchior Tavernier. Curiously, there is no engraved border on the right. The title is enclosed in a lovely strapwork cartouche. Originally published in Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties du Monde…, the map, like many of Sanson's works, appeared in a number of bound collections of maps by French cartographers. Dated 1641 but published in 1667.

References: Pastoureau, SANSON V A [104], Philips (A) #4260-104; Shirley (BI to 1650) #515.

Condition: A

A sharp impression with contemporary outline color and later color in the cartouche, on a bright sheet with a large coat of arms watermark. There are extraneous creases adjacent to the centerfold and minor soiling along the centerfold and edges of the sheet.
