Written by L.H. Schwaebe, Los Angeles auditor, this volume contains much more than just an auditor’s report. It provides a remarkably detailed snapshot of Los Angeles in 1904 and a history of many of the departments and their leadership up to that point. Includes a history of the health department, lists and descriptions of charities and franchises, and even a list of the location of all fire alarms are included in the volume. Serving as the frontispiece to the report is a photographic view entitled Business Center of Los Angeles, 1905 (4.3 x 25.0"). The view locates and names some of the prominent downtown buildings including the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Los Angeles Trust Building, Hotel Angelus, and more. In its review of the report, a local magazine in 1905 wrote: “This volume of 400 pages is a valuable historical document. For all time this book will be a useful work of reference.” 403 pages with extensive illustrations (primarily portraits of public leaders). Quarto, hardbound in red cloth with gilt title and decorative elements on the front cover. No past auction records or dealer listings. This 1904 report is not listed in OCLC and only a single copy of the 1905 edition was located.
