Vincenzo Coronelli was Italy's most esteemed cartographer and globe-maker. A member of the Franciscan order, he also founded the society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. This superb two-sheet map of Scotland features Coronelli's distinctive, bold style and is filled with decorative embellishments. A drape-style cartouche lists the counties and major cities in Scotland, and three additional cartouches are adorned with putti, coats of arms, and a pair of dogs hunting a bull. Each sheet stands on its own with full borders and a title cartouche.
Sharp impressions on bright sheets. The southern sheet has a small hole in an unengraved area of the map at top right. The first image is a composite image - the map is on two separate sheets.
