"Aaron Bohrod's America Its History",

This pictorial map by Aaron Bohrod highlights the important events in the history of the United States. The events depicted range from the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 to the earthquake and fire that destroyed San Francisco in 1906. Each event is illustrated pictorially with a banner listing the event and the year in which it occurred, and is superimposed on a map outlining each of the states. Included are events for which Americans are very proud, such as the Declaration of Independence and the Wright Brothers first flight, as well as sad and shameful events, including the establishment of the Ku Klux Klan, the slave trade, the Salem witch trials, and several wars against Native American Indians. The map was issued by the Associated American Artists as part of a series of three lithographic maps.

Born in Chicago, Aaron Bohrod (1907-92) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. His art focused on the working class and American life, which were the focus of three murals he created that were commissioned by the Treasury Departments Section of Fine Arts in Illinois. He served as an artist for the U.S. Army during World War II and also illustrated for Life magazine in Europe. His later work employed the highly realistic "trompe-l'œil" style, and many of his works can now be found in museums throughout the U.S.
