Three documents that paint vastly different pictures of life in territorial Arizona including:

A. The Resources of Arizona ... A Manual of Reliable Information Concerning the Territory, by Patrick Hamilton, published 1881 (5.5 x 8.6"). Published the same year as the Gunfight at the OK Corral, Hamilton writes disingenuously: “There is no territory on the distant frontier where law and order are so strictly maintained, or where the rougher elements, peculiar to the border, observe so mild-mannered an attitude, as in Arizona….Tucson, Tombstone…have an efficient police force, and the best of order is maintained” (p. 105). A fine copy of the rare Prescott printing. Octavo, 120 pages with original paper wrappers. Condition: Text has occasional light toning and wrappers are sunned. Bookplate of "C.R. Smith" on inside of front wrapper.

B. Lawlessness in Parts of Arizona. Message from the President of the United States..., from Sen. Ex. Doc. 58, 47th Congress, 1st Session, by U.S. Government, published 1882 (5.8 x 9.0"). The Acting Governor's 5 page report describes a situation of pervasive lawlessness by highway robbers and “cowboys,” or cattle thieves, supported by corrupt local law enforcement officials. The report names the Earps and mentions the “killing” by the Earps on the streets of Tombstone. This may be the earliest major reference to the Earps. Disbound. Condition: Clean but slightly rough at the corners.

C. Lawlessness in Arizona. Message from the President of the United States..., from H.R. Doc. 188, 47th Congress, 1st Session, by U.S. Government, published 1882 (5.7 x 8.9"). In this 3 page document, the Acting Governor asks for funds to establish a volunteer militia or posse to deal with the continuing lawlessness. The President suggests giving the U.S. army a greater role in assisting the civil authorities. Disbound. Condition: Clean with one extraneous crease.
