This traditional Asian conical hat was a promotional give-away at the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane, Washington to celebrate Northwest Orient Airlines' routes from the United States to the Far East. The center of the hat features a map of North America and part of the Far East showing the airlines' routes, including Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Opposite the map is an image of a junk ship. The hat is made of cardboard and includes the original elastic band that extends around the next to secure the hat.

Founded in 1926, US-based Northwest Airways began servicing the Far East in 1947 and transitioned to using the name Northwest Orient Airlines to promote its new routes. The airline dropped "Orient" from its branding after merging with Republic Airlines in 1986.
