A. California, by Joseph Hutchins Colton, dated 1855 (12.8 x 15.7"). This is one of the best mid-nineteenth century atlas maps of California. It shows the entire state with Utah and New Mexico territories on the eastern border. Two proposed railroad routes through the Central Valley are labeled "Explored Route for Atlantic & Pacific R.R." and a northern route through Fredonyers Pass, north of Pyramid Lake, is marked "Practicable Route for Atlantic & Pacific R.R." The only completed railroads service the Gold Regions and Sacramento. A huge inset titled "City of San Francisco" shows the planned land expansion into the bay with the streets already drawn in. Condition: Light toning and a few spots. (B+)

B. Map of California and Nevada [on verso] Map of Washington Oregon and Idaho, by Hiram H. Hardesty, circa 1875 (12.2 x 17.0"). A highly detailed map of these two states that extends to include portions of Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Arizona. Depicts the evolving railroad network with the Union Pacific Railroad prominently depicted. Shows numerous wagon roads and the Overland Mail Route. Condition: (A)

C. Tunison's California, Oregon and Nevada [on verso] Tunison's Colorado [and] Tunison's Arizona, by H.C. Tunison, circa 1887 (12.5 x 19.9"). This wax engraved map is unusual for its use of late hand coloring, a laborious process that was largely abandoned two decades earlier. Beyond the brightly colored counties, the map shows good detail of the railroad network and is further embellished by insets of Yosemite and the Redwoods. Condition: Pleasant light toning, otherwise fine. (A)
