This uncommon and richly detailed map of China features political divisions, place names, and fine topographical detail. The map extends to show parts of the Gobi Desert, Birmah, and Tonking, but detail is almost entirely confined to China. It is by the German-born Julius Heinrich Klaproth (1783-1835), a traveler, linguist, ethnographer, historian, and pioneering orientalist. The map was issued after Klaproth's death in Eduoard Biot's Dictionnaire des Noms Anciens et Modernes... Engraved by Louis Berthe and published by Treuttel & Wurtz.
