A. 1876 Progress Map of the U.S. Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian..., by Lt. George M. Wheeler, dated 1876 (22.3 x 16.1"). A nice map that reflects the survey efforts in the West, covering the seasons of 1869 and 1871-75. It is a detailed representation of the various routes of western expeditions and the important surveys of King (40th parallel), Wheeler, Powell and Hayden. Among the many details are the locations of occupied and abandoned posts, astronomical stations, signal service stations, telegraphic lines, and the routes of cattle droves and trains. The progress maps are among the most interesting, informative and useful maps of the West. Condition: Issued folding with pleasant light toning and a few faint spots. (B+)

B. United States Showing Routes of Principal Explorers and Early Roads and Highways, by General Land Office, dated 1908 (31.9 x 23.4"). Handsome and very detailed map showing the tracks of nearly three dozen explorers such as Ponce de Leon, Sir Francis Drake, Fremont, Capt. Cook, Bering, and Lewis and Clark. The finely engraved map includes all of Cuba and has the following insets: Alaska, Philippine islands, Guam, Tutuila Group of the Samoan Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Panama Canal, Isthmus of Panama Showing Location of Canal and Porto Rico. The map shows the United States with very little territory unsurveyed. Additional features include international and state boundaries, state capitals and major cities, rivers and lakes, and survey grids. Condition: Clean, bright, issued folding. (A)
