Very decorative map of the coastline covering present-day Tunisia and Libya based on Gastaldi's great map of Africa and the ancient texts of Diodorus, Siculus, Plinius, Virgilius, Appianus, Halicarnasseus, Athenaeus, and Herodotus. The map extends to include Sicily and Malta. It includes a fabulous strapwork title cartouche and a large cartouche at bottom containing text and an inset plan of Carthage. Blank verso. Published in Petrus Bertius' Theatrum Geographiae Veteris…, which included maps by Mercator, Ortelius, and newly engraved maps by Pieter van den Keere.

References: Van den Broecke #218.

A nice impression on a bright sheet with a few spots of printer's ink residue. The map has been trimmed to the neatline and professionally remargined with a portion of the neatline replaced in facsimile.
