This fascinating lot includes two examples of the same map that appeared in German editions of Mallet's Description de l'Univers, with the two engravings being mirror images of one another. The engraving is a fine depiction of Icaria, Patmos, and a few other islands in the Aegean Sea. Several ships and a galley battle fill the sea. The title appears on a ribbon-style cartouche in the sky. It is likely that the original plate became too damaged to use, and the engraver mistakenly reversed the image when copying the original.
