Salvador, formerly the capital of Brazil, was a strategic port under Portuguese control. This fine copper engraving shows the walled city of Salvador with ships and boats filling the harbor in the foreground. A lettered key at bottom identifies numerous locations. This anonymous Spanish view is a larger copy of Arnoldus Montanus' view of the city, published in 1671.
