This is an updated version of L'Amerique Septentrionale et Meridionale… . The distance scales are now arrayed below the neatline and the northwest coast of North America extends above California. A Grande Riviere coulante a l'ouest, inspired by the tales of Baron Lahontan, includes the large salt lake labeled Tahuglauks. Other rivers emptying into the Pacific hint at the possibility of a navigable link between the Pacific and Atlantic. The political realities of the period are shown in the table at right that lists the colonial possessions of Britain, France, Portugal, Holland, Denmark, and Spain. The two large insets of Hispaniola and Martinique focus on the major centers of French commerce in the Americas.
