This uncommon plan depicts the excavations of the ancient city of Pompeii on the Bay of Naples in southern Italy. Pompeii was buried under 30 feet of ash and magma during the explosion of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The numbered key at bottom left identifies 136 locations, including the date when they were excavated. Although the map is almost entirely in Italian, the legend adjacent to the title is in French. This map is based on the work of Carlo Bonucci, who was architect and director of the archaeological works at Pompeii from 1827-37. After his term officially ended, he continued working on the dig until 1849 as a local architect, and also served as superintendent of the Museum beginning in 1844. He published several guidebooks on the important sites of Pompeii that were quite popular, appearing in five Italian and two French editions. Engraved by Na. Ricci.
