This wax-engraved (cerographic) map depicts all of the Hawaiian Islands and was issued in Reverend Hiram Bingham's memoir, A Residence of Twenty-One Years in the Sandwich Islands. Detail is limited to topography, volcanoes, rivers and coastal place names. Bingham was a missionary in Hawaii and helped to devise the Hawaiian alphabet in order to translate the Bible. This map was one of the first to use the new 12-letter alphabet. While no attribution is given for the map, it is most likely Sidney Morse, who published a similar map of Hawaii in his Cerographic Missionary Atlas.

Condition: A

A mostly clean and bright example that was issued folding and now flattened and backed with tissue. There is a short crease at top left and a remnant of an old stamp on verso that barely shows through at bottom right.
