These four maps show the evolution of surveying by the USGS over a thirteen-year period (1884-1897) including:

A. Map of the United States Exhibiting the Progress Made in the Geographic Survey, dated 1884. Surveying is focused on the western states including Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. The legend shows four different surveys: Triangulation, Area Surveyed by Geological Survey, Area Surveyed by Northern Transcontinental Survey, and Area Surveyed by other Organizations. From the Fifth Annual Report.

B. Map of the United States Showing the Progress of Geologic Mapping, circa 1892. Shows both "mapping completed" and "mapping awaiting completion of engraving of topographical atlas sheets." Primary mapping regions include Massachusetts, eastern Maryland and Virginia, western North Carolina, northern Arizona and northern California. From the Thirteenth Annual Report.

C. Map Showing Condition and Progress of Topographic Surveys and Location of Gaging Stations for the Fiscal Year 1896-1897, dated 1896-97. New surveys include a significant portion of Indian Territory, portions of New York, Montana and California. From the Eighteenth Annual Report.

D. Map Showing Condition and Progress of Astronomic Location, Primary Triangulation, Primary Traverse and Precise Leveling, for the Fiscal Year 1896-7, dated 1896-97. Uses the same base map as above and is filled with details of astronomic locations, triangulations and traverses. From the Eighteenth Annual Report.
