A. United States North America, by G.W. Swanston, circa 1852 (20.1 x 16.1"). An uncommon map with interesting western territories. Dakota Territory is yet to be organized, with the large Minnesota Territory extending to the Missouri River. A huge Nebraska Territory extends from the Missouri River to the Continental Divide where it meets the oversized Oregon Territory, and south all the way to Texas and Indian Territory. The Texas panhandle extends to the Arkansas River and includes a small sliver well into present-day Colorado - a surprising feature given the map's date. The large Utah Territory stretches between California and Nebraska encompassing present-day Nevada and Colorado. New Mexico Territory features the pre-Gadsden Purchase border. Good detail of topography and watershed, and many place names. Condition: Faint original outline color on a sturdy sheet with minor cockling along the centerfold. (A)

B. Stati Uniti dell' America Settentrionale, by G. Civelli, from Atlante Geografico, circa 1858 (15.2 x 11.8"). A scarce Italian produced map of the United States during a time of very interesting territorial borders just before the onset of the Civil War. Here Minnesota includes most of present day North and South Dakota. Nebraska and Kansas Territories fill the entire plains region with Nebraska extending all the way to the Canadian boundary. Washington and Oregon both extend eastward to the Rocky Mountains. Utah and New Mexico are both shown in their largest configurations. No sign yet of Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana or the Dakotas. Several exploration routes are shown, including those of Fremont. Engraved by P. Bezzera. Condition: Original outline color with light toning and scattered foxing. (B+)
