This is one of a pair of world maps Wells included in his A New Sett of Maps... and depicts California as an Island. The northwest coast of North America is left blank and marked "Parts as yet Undiscovered" and the southern coastline of Australia is not yet formed. A note in the southern Pacific Ocean states that "New Zealand supposed to be part of ye Southern unknown Continent." Below the map are views of Oxford with men in various costume representing the continents. Dedicated to His Highness William, Duke of Gloucester who was attending Oxford where Wells was a teacher of mathematics and geography. Engraved by Michael Burghers.

Condition: B

There is some paper weakness mostly at left that has been archivally reinforced. There are several extraneous creases that have been pressed flat, light toning and soiling, and two tiny wormholes in the title only visible when held to light.
