This uncommon little map is from a history and geography book for Catholic students. The huge northwest coast of North America is marked Terra Incognitae. Only two cities are named in the present day United States: Philadelphia and Santa Fe. Florida is larger than the colonies, and Mary Land and Neu Holland oddly appear to the south of Virginia. There is a pictorial title cartouche depicting Benedictine monks bringing Christianity to the New World. Desing was an eighteenth century Benedictine monk of Ensdorf who devoted his life to scientific studies and was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
