This detailed map of southern China depicts the provinces of Yunnan (Iunnan), Guizhou (Queicheu), Guangxi (Quangsi), and Guangdong (Quantung) as well as the island Hainan, which was under the administration of the Guangdong province from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries. A legend at upper left identifies cities and towns of various sizes, forts, and mines for gold, silver and iron. The map is embellished with sailing ships, a distance cartouche surrounded by mer-people, and a strapwork title cartouche flanked by men and children of the region. Originally issued by Jan Jansson in 1658, this is the later re-issue by Gerard Valk and Peter Schenk.
