Ortelius based this map of Brabant, a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire covering parts of the Netherlands and Belgium, on Jacob van Deventer's six-sheet map published in 1536. Numerous towns are shown, including Antwerp, Rotterdam, Roermond and Bergen op Zoom with north oriented to the left. An inset centering on Mechelen, an important city in between Antwerp and Brussels, appears in the top right corner in one of the map's four ornate cartouches. This is the second plate with French text on verso, published in 1598.
