This map depicts the Siege of Veracruz, which was an important battle at a strategic seaside port during the Mexican-American war. The Americans prevailed after a twenty-day battle and then marched on to Mexico City. The map shows the positions under Major General Scott, surrounding the city with nearly 13,000 soldiers. A note at bottom indicates that only 12 people perished and 61 were wounded. Batteries and encampments, headquarters, and troop positions are all shown in good detail. Drawn by Captain McClellan.
