Currier and Ives was a printmaking company based in New York City from 1834-1907, specializing in high quality, hand printed and colored stone lithographs. The focus of their work was American life, cities and people, and they often employed celebrated artists of the day to render drawings to be reproduced in print form. Fanny Palmer, whose many views are among the best known of Currier & Ives, created this dramatic scene of a steamboat race on the Mississippi River between the Memphis and the James Howard. A full moon peeks out from the clouds above. This print was voted as the #9 best small folio print from Currier & Ives, as ranked by the American Historical Print Collectors Society's New Best 50 vote in 1988. Sheet size is 14.0 x 10.5".
