"Il Ducato di Mantova di Nuova Projezione", Zatta, Antonio

This finely engraved copper plate map shows limited details of the countryside around the fortified town of Montova (Mantua), in Lombardy and about 20 miles south of Verona and Lago di Garda. It details the course of numerous rivers from the Italian Alps, including the Oglio and Po. The map extends to name Ostiglia in the east, Castiglione in the north and Viadana on the Po in the west. Embellished with a monument style title cartouche and distance scale. Founded around 2000 BC, the island city of Mantua is perhaps best known for its mention in Shakespeare's classic play Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is sent into exile in Mantua for killing a Capulet in a swordfight. He eventually returns to Verona where he learns that his love, Juliet, has died. Drawn by G. Pitteri and engraved by G.
