A decorative map that shows Saintonge from the southern tip of the Island of Oleron to the mouth of the Gironde. Hundreds of cities are named, including the famous city of Cognac. Saintonge was the birthplace of the famous French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The title cartouche is attended by a pair of putti and a female figure with dividers and a globe. The map is further adorned with a strapwork distance scale and two sailing ships. Dutch text on verso. An attractive map of a major wine growing region.


Condition: B

Original color with light offsetting and a centerfold separation and adjacent tear that enters 1/2" into map at bottom that have both been closed on verso with archival tape. There is a crack in title cartouche caused by the oxidation of the green pigment that has also been closed on verso with archival tape.
