This lovely title page to Bertius' edition of Ptolemy's Geographia was copied from Mercator's edition from 1578. The two great Greek geographers stand beneath a classic portico: Claudius Ptolemy, holding an armillary sphere and a pair of dividers; and Marinus, holding a rolled-up map. In the foreground is a globe depicting the ancient world. Above the arch sits a celestial globe flanked by small spheres and urns. Bertius' edition of Theatri Geographiae Veteris was printed in Leyden by Isaac Elzevir and published in Amsterdam by Jodocus Hondius.
Lovely color on watermarked paper with a couple short tears and two small holes, all of which are in blank margins and have been archivally repaired. There is a manuscript notation in top blank margin, far from image.
