This lovely view depicts numerous ships entering the entrance to the harbor of Galveston, with the growing city in the background. A steam engine pulling cars full of cotton enters a large train station flying an American flag. Here, Galveston is portrayed on a hilly landscape, a misconception that is believed to have originated from Mrs. Matilda Houstoun's account of her stay in Galveston and Houston in Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, published in 1844. Over the next 15 years, numerous views of Galveston and Houston were depicted with mountainous terrain. This view was published in the February 5, 1859 edition of The Illustrated News of the World.
