This chart, based on a Russian plan by Captn. Yassilieff, details the vicinity of Sitka and the vast Sitka Sound. Scores of islands are delineated most still using the Russian names including the large Yaponskoi Island which today is home to the Rocky Gutierrez Airport and the University of Alaska Southeast-Sitka. Good detail along the coast and interior to include Swan Lake (Lake Lebyaje) and the Governor's House. The settlement is shown as a group of several buildings but no roads or streets are drawn. The British spent a great deal of capital exploring and mapping the coastal regions of Alaska, an area not far from their British Columbia lands. When, a few years later, the Russians offered to sell the territory to Britain they declined and left the negotiations to the United States. First drawn in 1850 with a major update in 1860, this edition is with additions and corrections to May 1863. Engraved by J. & C. Walker.
