The first is a great birds-eye view of Avalon Town on Santa Catalina Island that is typical of the very graphic works from this period. In very nice printed color (21.5 x 16.4"), the view shows the Casino, piers and extends up the mountain to the Bird Park above the Golf Course. This tourist piece was drawn by Wren Lister and features a surrounding border of vignette views. Neptune and a mermaid are in full color in the corners. The map folds into self covers "Souvenir Santa Catalina Island Map and Guide" with a map of the island (10" 16") in full color. Other panels are a "Directory of Avalon Town" with places of tourist interest listed by category. James Wren Lister (1897-1952) was born in England but settled in Los Angeles in 1925. Published by the L.C.B. Co., and dated 1948. A small amount of soiling on one fold on verso, still fine. (A+)

Reconnaissance of the S.E. End of San Clemente Island, by U.S. Coast Survey, 1856, black & white, (17 x 12"). Depicts the southern end of the island with well-detailed soundings and outlines of kelp beds. Engraved vignette showing the island as seen from the east. From the important surveys by Lieut. James Alden. Toned on one fold with short split closed on verso. (B+)
