"Territorium Archangelopolin inter Petroburgum et Vologdam", Delisle, Joseph Nicholas

This is a very uncommon map of northwestern Russia including St. Petersburg, Archangel and Vologda. The map is filled with minute detail of the countryside including roads, canals and many place names. The title cartouche features Elizabeth, Empress of Russia, and the personification of Fame. Joseph Nicholas Delisle, younger brother of Guillaume, founded the Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg, and worked in Russia from 1726-47. One of his most important contributions to cartography was the important Atlas Russicus, the first atlas of Russia.
