This scarce map with its bold color and wonderful artwork is more a work of art than a map. A beautiful Art Deco-style map designed by Michael Baltekal-Goodman, in collaboration with Professor Eugene Neumaus. It shows the greater Oakland-Berkley-Alameda area with all major streets named and features scores of illustrations of important buildings and sights in the area. The amazing, colorful and boldly engraved border is filled with Art Deco icons, a dozen images of local historical events, some quite quirky, and sea-horse panels separating the images. The map itself is vividly engraved and colored in brilliant orange, blue, green, yellow, white and black. Further embellished with wind heads, fancy cartouches and the sea contains quaint depictions of sail boats, ferries, freighters, ancient sailing ships and sea monsters. The style is similar to Jo Mora but much bolder. Folds into the original 11"x 12" decorative envelope, the front of which is the same as the upper left portion of the map with the addition of a title square. Published by the Sather Gate Book Shop of Berkeley and printed by Union Litho. of San Francisco & Oakland.
