This precisely engraved map locates the Jesuit missions throughout Asia. The map extends from the Red Sea to the Philippines and includes Indo-China and the East Indies. Scherer's highly imaginative representation of Hokkaido (Iedso) is connected to Honshu by a narrow isthmus. The Mariana Islands form a prominent archipelago trailing off the southeast coast of Japan. The decorative cartouche shows the conversion of the Asian people to Christianity and incorporates a vignette of Adam and Eve with the serpent and the apple tree. Two sailing ships further decorate the map.
