Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strap work frame that encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius, in tribute to her late husband, and appeared in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Latin text on verso.
