This beautiful map replaced Hondius' map of the North Pole and became the prototype for many later maps including those of Blaeu. Baffin Bay is named, and Hudson Bay carries the name of Buttons Bay. Rhumb lines radiate from the North Pole and several compass roses embellish the chart. A large title cartouche, with two figures and numerous wind heads conveniently hide the northwest coast of America. The map is further decorated with ships and another cartouche with Jansson’s imprint, which depicts men in parkas, a polar bear and foxes. According to Burden, this is the second state of the map. Latin text on verso.

References: Burden #250; Kershaw #105.

Condition: B+

Dark impression and nice color with a few minor abrasions in map, and one tiny hole just inside the left border at top. There are a couple short minor marginal tears, not affecting the map.

Estimate: $1,100 - $1,200
