This map features California as an island and is very similar to McLaughlin #18 and #89 except the northern shore of California is more indented, but still sloping up toward the east. All five Great Lakes are shown but still misshapen and opened to the west. The Mississippi River has numerous tributaries, but barely rises above Spanish Florida with no obvious origin, unlike McLaughlin #18, which shows the river originating in a Canadian Lake named "Lac des Sioux". There are many place names within Nouveau Mexique including Santa Fe and Grenade. The British colonies are shown simply as Nouvelle Angleterre and Virginie. Decorative title cartouche in upper right. Tom: I Pag: 490 at upper right above neatline. This is a smaller edition of Sanson's quarto-sized map of America, published in Zacharias Chatelain's multi-volume La Science des Personnes de Cour....

References: McLaughlin #91.

Dark, early impression. Short tear in lower margin just entering border. Margins are about 1/2" and appear original.
