Two copper engraved views from this important history of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Valentyn’s account detailed the discoveries of Abel Tasman in Australasia during the course of his two voyages of 1642 & 1644, other explorations and his own experiences in the area in 1686-94 and 1706-13. The first copper engraved view (15x11.8") is a detailed bird's-eye view of the Amboyna fleet of 66 outriggers, each of which is numbered and named in the table below. These ships formed a fleet that was used in island-to-island raids. The VOC assembled their own fleet of these ships, supplemented with a few of European design in the early stages of the conquest to subdue the opposition to Dutch rule. The second engraving (11.6x7.2") is a very detailed view of the Spice Islands outrigger, Cora-cora. Numerous seamen row from the ship as well as from the outrigger while six flags fly from the ship.
