"Map of the World",

Student executed manuscript double hemispheric world map, signed by "Ermina Drury, Worthington" in Massachusetts. It is difficult to date precisely when in the 19th century this map was made, though the model the artist presumably worked from would have been published in the early part of the nineteenth century. There is a prominent Louisiana Territory, the area labeled N Mexico became Texas in 1836; Australia is New Holland (Matthew Flinders proposed the name Australia in 1814), the Pacific coast of the North America is labeled New Albion and California is labeled New California. The map is constructed on two pieces of paper; with the lower quarter of the Western Hemisphere pasted onto the overall sheet. The bird illustration is characteristic of early 1800's folk art. A highly collectable hand-drawn map that includes a desirable folk art element.

With some toning and staining, and creases. The smaller piece of paper is toned darker than balance of the map. Professionally conserved and remounted on new linen.
