"Accuratissima Brasiliae Tabula", Hondius/Jansson
Period: 1666 (circa)
Color: Hand Color
19 x 15 inches
48.3 x 38.1 cm
A fine decorative map of Brazil with north oriented to the right. Two insets reveal Dutch interest in the area (Baja de Todos los Sanctos & Pernambuco). The interior is largely blank and features scenes of native life including warfare and cannibalism. Sailing ships, fine compass rose and two decorative cartouches grace the sea. Jansson's imprint has replaced that of Hondius. Latin text on verso.
Manuscript date neatly written in scale cartouche. Later color with some bleed through on verso. Some short edge tears and one longer tear on centerfold, still confined to blank margins.
