This plan illustrates Vauban's second system of fortifications. Landau was chosen by Vauban as the chief fortress for Lower Alsace and he lavished all his resources on it. Nicolas de Fer held the title of Geographer at Louis XIV's court. He was one of the most prolific publishers of plans of European cities in the late seventeenth century.
