"Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties…", Jaillot, Alexis-Hubert

Second state of this handsome map issued during the California as an Island controversy. The first issue, in 1694, showed California as an island on Sanson's model. In this edition, published by R. & J. Ottens, the map was updated but leaves the question of California's insularity open by eliminating the land to its north, but leaving a small gap at the head of the Mer Rouge. The Great Lakes are now shown complete and the Rio del Norte flows incorrectly into the Gulf of California. The lion's share of today's United States is divided between Floride and Nouveau Mexique. Sanson's cartography remains in evidence, especially along the Gulf Coast and Florida is shown as an archipelago. Decorative title cartouche with central crown and coat of arms, two Native Americans and tropical birds at upper left, with the distance scale cartouche on below. The Latin title in upper margin is, "America septentrionalis in suas praecipuas partes divisa, ad usum serenissimi Burgundiae Ducis."
