"The City of Boston", Currier & Ives

Currier & Ives' lovely bird's-eye panoramic view of the city with more than 60 references along the bottom to important buildings and landmarks. A large and remarkable stone chromolithograph that details the city down to individual streets and buildings. The engraving suggests a dynamic city with numerous steam locomotives belching smoke, working factories and scores of boats, including tugs, steam and sail, working in the harbor, entering and leaving docks, etc. Although steam presses were available by the 1850's, Currier & Ives believed a hand printed lithograph to be superior. This print attests to this ideal. Drawn by Parsons & Atwater, and published by Currier & Ives from 125 Nassau Street. A seldom seen and most desirable print that is in remarkable condition.
