This useful map is housed in the rear pocket of the Bureau of Ethnology's Seventh Annual Report. Compiled under the direction of Henry Gannett, it is vibrantly colored to better understand the possible early linguistic relationships of the various Native American tribes. This is the first edition of this map and the basis for a similar map that appeared later in the 11th Census of the United States. The report also includes a small folding Ojibwa Indian Reservations in Minnesota and Wisconsin (12.0 x 7.7") and several color plates. Accompanying papers include Powell's "Indian Linguistic Families of America North of Mexico," W.J. Hoffman's "The Midewiwin or 'Grand Medicine Society' of the Ojibwa," and James Mooney's "The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees." 409 pages. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt decoration on front cover and gilt title on spine.
