"[Lot of 2] Tartaria [and] Nieuwe Kaart van Tartarie, na de Alderlaaste Ontdekking int Ligt Gebragt",

A. Tartaria, by Speed/Kaerius, from A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, circa 1646, hand color (4.8 x 3.4"). This is a great map of Tartary is from the "miniature Speed" atlas, with maps engraved by Pieter van den Keere and based on John Speed's folio-sized maps published under the same title, A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World. The map extends from eastern Europe and Moscovi, across Asia to show a Part of America across the Strait of Anian. It extends south to Afghanistan and the Caspian Sea. Korea is shown as an island. Scores of places are named, including Nova Zembla, Permia, Bramas, and many more. With the imprint of Petrus Karius (Peter Van den Keere). References: King (2nd Ed.) pp. 116-117. Conditon: A nice impression with minor soiling that is mostly confined to the blank margins and a small chip at top right that has been archivally repaired, not affecting map image.

B. Nieuwe Kaart van Tartarie, na de Alderlaaste Ontdekking int Ligt Gebragt, by Isaac Tirion, dated 1732, black & white (13.8 x 11.2"). This is a very handsome and detailed chart of the northern regions of Asia reflecting the recent discoveries in Kamchatka by Witsen with the icy cape Kaap Suetoinos, which was believed to render it impossible to sail round the northeastern tip of Asia. Compagnie Land is shown off the southern coast of Kamchatka. Title in block style and a small compass rose decorates the chart. Condition: A crisp impression with faint offsetting. Issued folding.
