This fine title page is in the classic architectural style of the Renaissance and graced the section on France of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The title is flanked by two pillars capped by a domed structure supporting the royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of France after the conclusion of the French Wars of Religion. Across the top is the motto of Henry IV, "Duo Protegit Unus" ("One protects two" - in other words, the king protects both France and Navarre). The Latin title is pasted onto the engraved architectural framework, as was customary with title pages.

References: Van der Krogt (Vol. II) #2:22A.

Condition: B+

A fine impression on paper with a large Atlas watermark and light soiling. There are a couple archivally repaired tears on verso that are under where the title is pasted down and therefore not visible on recto.

Estimate: $80 - $100
