Jacob von de Sandrart, a notable painter and art dealer in Nuremberg, produced a number of separately issued large maps. This map of the African continent is geographically a close copy of de Wit's map of circa 1670. As on that map, the Nile arises from the two lakes Zaire and Zafflan. The lively cartouche is Sandrart's original design and includes a variety of native peoples, animals, and reptiles. The map was engraved by J.B. Homann before he set up his own map publishing business. It is one of the few maps with Homann's imprint as an engraver.

Full contemporary color on a moderately toned sheet, which is backed with tissue to reinforce and repair a couple of small centerfold separations and a 2" edge tear at bottom. The edge tear was previously repaired with old tape and some residue is visible on verso.
