Splendid French vellum leaf from the Hours of the Virgin, Compline - the last prayer of the day. The recto margin is beautifully illuminated with a delicate garland of small flowers in red and blue and many leaves in gold. A superbly executed initial 'D' begins Psalm 129: "De profundis clamavi ad te domine dne exaudi vocem meam" (Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord, Lord hear my voice…) Ten more initials and a blue flower completes the illuminations on this fine leaf.
