First is a collection of essays on the early Native American contact with European explorers, fishermen and traders of the Atlantic coast region near the Penobscot River in Maine. The exploration, culture and cartography in the "Norumbega" region vividly comes to life through text and 100 illustrations, which are primarily from the Smith Collection at the Osher Map Library, University of Southern Maine. Published by University of Nebraska Press, 1994, 388 pp, illustrations in color and B & W. 8vo, hard bound in blue buckram, dj. Second is a study of exploration based on narratives from the explorers themselves. The maps illustrating the volume assist in placing the different explorations in their proper world perspective for better understanding and analysis. Edited by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, revised edition, 1952, 788 pp, illustrated in B & W. 8vo, hard bound in red cloth, without dj.
